12. Our fathers had provoked. Chiefly, by their flagrant idolatry and the moral abominations it involvedâthe sacrifice of children, and licentious rites belonging to the worship of Baal. For centuries, with only short and rare intervals, “the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen,” and even “polluted the house of the Lord which he had hallowed in Jerusalem” (2 Chron. 36:14).
