4. Meremoth. A member of one of the priestly families that had not been able to establish its identity at the time of Zerubbabel (see Ezra 2:61). He had been a traveling companion of Ezra (Ezra 8:33; Neh. 3:21). Now he built two sections of the wall (Neh. 3:21), and some months later signed the covenant ( 10:5).
Meshullam. One of the chief men who accompanied Ezra 13 years earlier on his return from Babylon (Ezra 8:16). He now took the responsibility of building two wall sections (Neh. 3:30), and later signed the covenant of Nehemiah as a tribal head ( 10:20). Although he was a loyal supporter of Nehemiah’s cause, Nehemiah complains that he had given his daughter to a son of the enemy, Tobiah ( 6:18).
