18. Chief among three. This is the reading of the margin of the Hebrew Bible. The word for “three” in the text is either misspelled in the presently available manuscripts or incomplete. Several Hebrew manuscripts and the Syriac read “thirty.” According to the translation of the , Abishai was the first in the second triad ( 19) and Benaiah ( 20, 22) was the second, with the third member not named. If Abishai was chief of the “thirty,” then Benaiah was besides the three, but he and Abishai were not equal to them.
