13. Unto Caleb. See on 14:12. The verb should probably be translated as “had given” (see 14:13). This paragraph also occurs in Judges 1:10-15 with slight variations, where the narrator is probably copying from this earlier narrative with his own minor variations. It can hardly represent, as some have held, two phases of the capture of Hebron, as the same circumstances attend each narration.
It is remarkable that Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, mentioned more than 40 years before when the 12 spies went up from Kadesh-barnea (Num. 13:22), are apparently living. It has been thought that these were the names of three clans of the Anakim, rather than personal names.
