Luke 18:33

Adam Clarke
Bible Commentary

And the third day he shall rise again - See Hosea 6:2; and let the reader observe that the passage should be read thus: In the third day he will raise Him up, (יקמנו ) and we shall live before him: his resurrection shall be the pledge, token, and cause of ours.

Albert Barnes
Notes on the Whole Bible
Verses 31-33

See the notes at Matthew 20:17-19.

By the prophets - Those who foretold the coming of the Messiah, and whose predictions are recorded in the Old Testament.

Son of man - The Messiah. They predicted that certain things would take place respecting the Messiah that was to come. See the Daniel 9:25-27 notes; Isaiah 53 notes. “These things,” Jesus said, would be accomplished “in him,” he being the Son of man, or the Messiah.

Matthew Henry
Concise Bible Commentary
The Spirit of Christ, in the Old Testament prophets, testified beforehand his sufferings, and the glory that should follow, 1Pe 1:11. The disciples' prejudices were so strong, that they would not understand these things literally. They were so intent upon the prophecies which spake of Christ's glory, that they overlooked those which spake of his sufferings. People run into mistakes, because they read their Bibles by halves, and are only for the smooth things. We are as backward to learn the proper lessons from the sufferings, crucifixion, and resurrection of Christ, as the disciples were to what he told them as to those events; and for the same reason; self-love, and a desire of worldly objects, close our understandings.
Ellen G. White
The Desire of Ages, 547-51

This chapter is based on Matthew 20:20-28; Mark 10:32-45; Luke 18:31-34.

The time of the Passover was drawing near, and again Jesus turned toward Jerusalem. In His heart was the peace of perfect oneness with the Father's will, and with eager steps He pressed on toward the place of sacrifice. But a sense of mystery, of doubt and fear, fell upon the disciples. The Saviour “went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid.” DA 547.1

Early Writings, 161

Thus far the cunning and hatred of Satan had not broken up the plan of salvation. The time for the accomplishment of the object for which Jesus came into the world was drawing near. Satan and his angels consulted together and decided to inspire Christ's own nation to cry eagerly for His blood and heap upon Him cruelty and scorn. They hoped that Jesus would resent such treatment and fail to maintain His humility and meekness. EW 161.1

While Satan was laying his plans, Jesus was carefully opening to His disciples the sufferings through which He must pass—that He would be crucified and that He would rise again the third day. But their understanding seemed dull, and they could not comprehend what He told them. EW 161.2
